The Project & Research Team

The Project
This semester will be dedicated toward looking at a prototypical public school within the city of Vancouver. The school in this case will be Trafalgar Elementary in the Arbutus Ridge neighborhood.

This project represents an opportunity to discuss how to increase the connections between the physical grounds of the school to sustainable educational, health and nutrition. The specific areas to display these connections at the school are through community gardens, enhanced play spaces, improved communal spaces and landscapes that provide environmental services (such as helping with stormwater management).

Can a redesign of the school grounds yield an environment which embraces these new values and explores the use of new / sustainable materials while being at the same time cost effective / low maintenance? What should the new prototype for VSB school grounds be?

Research Team
The team is made up of faculty and graduate research students in Landscape Architecture, Education and Land and Food Systems and is currently working with other VSB schools. The project is called "Think&EatGreen@School" and involves looking broadly at strategies to connect food, health and the environment within schools and the VSB.
